Kids the ♥ of Co-Parenting: A Workshop for Family Professionals
A program for separated or divorced parents that fosters resilience in children and their families.
This program, unique to the Calgary area, was designed and developed by Elaine Bucknum and Sandy Shuler in 2002 for Jewish Family Service Calgary. In developing this psycho-educational workshop series, Elaine and Sandy were seeking to address a gap in service for those families experiencing separation and divorce. Their vision was for adults to learn how to effectively co-parent through separation and divorce for the benefit of the children involved; for children to build resiliency to separation and divorce as a result of their parents co-parenting more effectively; for children to maintain access to both of their parents and extended families despite the life change. “Effective Co-Parenting: Putting Kids First” is delivered in small group format to diverse groups comprised of both biological parents, single moms and single dads, and blended family parents. All ages, backgrounds, religions and stages in the separation/divorce process attend. Participants attend the program by a professional and self-referral process. A variety of facilitation methods include video tape, group discussions, exercises, personal reflection, homework and presentation. The course is not therapy based but rather offers skills, strategies, resources and support for participants who are moving through the process of separation and divorce. Since this course was developed, participant feedback has helped to inform the program's evolution. Evaluations from participants rate this program very highly.
